TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Ten local men graduated from Ivy Tech’s Welding Qualifications Prep Program on Friday.

The program is a partnership of the Indiana Department of Correction along with Ivy Tech Community College Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility.

The program helped these 10 offenders earn their American Welding Society qualification as well as a certification from OSHA.

The program aims not only to to expand the graduates’ skill sets but also to set them up with employment after release.

“When you say midsummer prison welding all in the same sentence, it sounds not so fun or easy, but it really is a pleasant and kind of powerful experience,” said welding instructor Darrin Dayhoff.

“I like welding, I mean it’s my first time and it was really cool and they gave us a job opportunity at Eagle Rail Car and I’m gonna take that because it’s close to home,” said graduate Sean Swonger.

This was the sixth graduation for this program at Ivy Tech.
