Sweet 16 celebration brings community together while social distance is urged

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It’s not the sweet 16 birthday party celebration that Victoria Warnock had in mind. But perhaps, it was one that her family needed.

“Try not to cancel your birthday or your family might do this,” Warnock said.

In the midst of a global pandemic with social distancing in full force, Victoria Warnock had her 16th birthday. She says she wanted the day to be surrounded by her friends.

“I miss you guys,” she said.

You remember what it’s like to be 16, But your party likely wasn’t this boisterous.

Victoria’s family surprised her with a backyard party with 16 balloons taped to their back fence and signs that say, honk it’s my sweet 16. And honks they got.

It wasn’t just a surprise party for Victoria, her grandma Annie, says the family was surprised with the community’s reaction.

“Car after car after car, we’ve been very surprised. We even had a guy who was walking who had no vehicle and clapped his hands and said, ‘honk, honk, honk, happy birthday,'” Annie Lucas said.

The family says this was an effort to give Victoria the party she deserved and boost morale in the community too. Something her dad, Jason, says will help instill the message that we can get through this pandemic.

“Everybody’s showing support and love and it just shows you how strong the community is at this time and it’s awesome,” Jason said.

The party implemented a six feet apart rule along with gloving up before cake was served and encouraging a good time.

“We’ve had a lot of fun today, we’ve yelled at everyone back who’s come by, we told them thank you, we’ve played games today, we’ve been outside all day,” Lucas said.

It was a sweet 16 celebration that helped bring a family closer together during a time we’re urged to separate.

“It gets you and your family closer than just hanging out with your friends,” Warnock said.

“To anyone watching this we want to say thank you for making this a very special day in this time to our grand daughter,” Lucas said.

Victoria’s grandmother wanted to also wish a happy sweet 16 today to her cousin Lauren who she was not able to see today.
