A new club is helping plant the idea of sustainability in area children.

It’s called the Super Diggers Salsa Club.

Its first meeting was held Tuesday in the ISU Community Garden.

Members, who are kindergartners through 12th graders, got busy sowing plants that happen to be ingredients to make salsa.

The club is part of Rethink Incorporated, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the amount of trash sent to landfills.

And coordinators say this club is a way to get kids to rethink being healthy and green.

“If we can grow healthier stuff  ourselves and eat the same, we’re already forming a closed loop.  And that is what sustainability is about,” says Dr. Kuntal Bhattacharyya, director of Center for Supply Management Research, which coordinates with Rethink, Inc. on this project.

Members will also learn about the environment, composting and nutrition.
