Sullivan, IN - An afternoon standoff in Sullivan County ends with one-woman dead. Officials were called to the Sullivan Days Inn after reports about an unruly guest at 1:24 p.m. of a female guest who was refusing to leave.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect in the hall and asked to speak with her.
She then barricaded herself in her hotel room.
The female guest refused to leave.
That's when officials obtained a master key and found the woman was armed with a gun.
Officers called for additional manpower including the ISP Emergency Response Team.
They also received a warrant for felony intimidation from a judge.
Police then evacuated the employees and other guests from the building.
Then just after 5:40 p.m., ISP reentered the room and exchanged fire.
"Obviously the first priority is innocent bystanders," Senior Trooper B.J. Patterson said. "So once the officers determined that the statement that this individual statement was made could be credible, they immediately began to evacuate other residents."
Those staying in the hotel will be allowed back in their rooms to collect their belongings and they will be moved to a different part of the hotel.
Officials say there is no immediate danger to the public, but they would like the public to stay away from the area.
An autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
The identification of the victim will be released after the family has been notified.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, Sullivan City Police Department, Indiana State Police Crime Scene Units, Indiana State Police Detectives, Sullivan County Prosecutors Office, Sullivan County Coroner’s office and Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team were all called to the scene.
