Sullivan lifts evacuation of downtown city block

SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The city of Sullivan has lifted its emergency evacuation of the 12 North Court Street block.

The inhabitants of buildings in that block, which include Sullivan County Corrections, Followell Real Estate, Followell Law, Paws & Claws and Toys Auto Parts (NAPA) have resumed normal business operations.

Sullivan City Hall, which has temporarily relocated to the upstais of Innovate Sullivan, will reconvene at city hall Monday morning at 8:00 a.m.

The emergency evacuation was issued after the former Bodine Law Office suffered some unexpected structural degradation Wednesday morning. Officials were concerned not only about the structure, but also a shallow gas line exposed in the alley way.

According to a press release, a forensic engineer assessed the building and gas line Thursday morning and gave the city a sense of security to lift the evacuation.

The city is working with Ohio Valley Gas Corporation and Misco Enterprises to make sure the area is secured and protected.
