Stopping a terrible situation before it happens. That was the goal of a meeting that took place in a Wabash Valley community.
Organizations across the Valley attended an event to help prevent child abuse.
“Currently in Sullivan County we’ve got 293 children who are listed as abused or neglected so that represents about 1.5 percent of our total population and it’s become an epidemic,” Susie Pierce said.
Pinwheels filled the Sullivan County Civics Center Wednesday night as organizations gathered to help inform the public and help prevent child abuse
”Any time you get resources all under the same roof to support the community it not only benefits to the people that comes in that are looking for a bit information,” Shannon Jackson said.
The services ranged from child care, financial assistance to health and well-being.
The Children’s Bureau Inc. Helps provide free and voluntary home services and therapy.
“We help connect families to resources,” Heather Fulford said. “It’s a free voluntary program and with connecting with resources in the family we are able to provide financial assistance.”
Ireland Home Based Services Inc. works with families in the child protective services.
“We are a severs that comes into play after DCS involvement and we are often seen as someone who is maybe a nuisance or somebody that’s not wanted. But we are actually just people trying to help and we are trying to do our best and we can be trusted,” Whitney McKim said.
Pace Community Action Agency is a nonprofit community agency that helps families struggle with child care, financial services and more.
“Our mission is to provide services to our community and to help families become self-sufficient,” Cheryl Hagemeier said.
And Sullivan County Community Hospital helps informs family how to live healthy lives.
“We are talking about healthy living, healthy eating, healthy exercise and talking about foods and what good choices are,” Leslie Lentz said. “And then the hospital is also talking about the importance of using sunscreen all year round.”
