It’s just 7 days until Christmas, but thanks to DECA students at Terre Haute North Christmas came early.
The screams of more than 50 happy kids, made possible by Terre Haute North DECA students.
“We love seeing all the kids faces light up and being able to work with Eleanor and Brittany and all of the mentors at Camp Navigate,” Jenna Bird said.
Mary Gatrell and Jenna Bird were the minds behind the holiday happening Christmas party at the life center in Terre Haute.
DECA students raised more than 3 thousand dollars in scholarships to send kids to Camp Navigate, the center’s summer camp.
Like DECA the camp teaches students valuable lessons for their future.
“One of the goals in our project was to create a scholarship fund so that under privileged kids were able to be exposed to the same employability and soft skills kids who are able to attend Camp Navigate get,” Mary Gatrell said.
Tuesday night’s party was the projects grand finale.
It was a surprise for not only the students but for the center’s Camp Navigate Co-Founder, Eleanor Ramseier.
“And we thought there would be a few presents and a few games, but this is like a full Christmas party, where they brought in a Christmas tree and they have taken it to heart and done the best they can and it’s amazing,” Eleanor Ramseier said. “I’m impressed, I’m so impressed.”
For two hours kids got a chance to meet Santa, play reindeer games and indulge in the Christmas spirit, which included hand-picked gifts for each student.
“It’s really important for our older kids to work with the younger ones and they are learning how to give back to their community and how important it is to give back,” Cathie Bryant said.
Giving back, the perfect gift this holiday season.
This is the first year for the event and both Camp Navigate and Terre Haute North DECA students hope to make this a tradition for years to come.
