VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Update: As of 12:20 p.m., Vermillion County Chief Deputy Chad Hennis said the suspect has been taken into custody.

While Hennis declined to release the man’s identity, he said that the suspect was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon and intimidation.

Hennis said the individual who reportedly fired a gun during the initial incident was identified, and the weapon was detained, however no arrest was made, saying it would be up to the county prosecutor to determine if the action was justified.

He also said this about what the future holds for this investigation, “The Indiana State Police crime scene technicians are here processing the scene. They are in the process of securing a second search warrant for the residence to do a search of that residence for drug products that have been located,” Hennis added.


Original: Law enforcement are currently dealing with a stand off situation in St. Bernice and are asking the public to avoid the area.

According to the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office, the incident is located near the area of Broadway and Reed Street.

The sheriff said the situation involves a male subject, however no name has been released. According to Vermillion County Chief Deputy Chad Hennis, the situation began around 2:45 a.m. with an argument at a Red’s Tavern that escalated into ramming pick-up trucks outside.

During the situation, a bystander reportedly fired a gunshot at the suspect. Hennis said the suspect is believed to be barricaded in his home.

The situation is reportedly contained to one residence. The sheriff said there was no threat to the public.
