VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Memorial Day weekend is usually known as the unofficial start of summer. Many people may have plans to make a splash in the pool. However, COVID-19 is changing the plans of some area pools.
Forest Park pool in Brazil opens May 25. Deming Park pool in Terre Haute opens the second week in June, according to city park officials and Rainbow Beach in Vincennes is closed for now.
Parks Superintendent Steve Beaman said it may be difficult to enforce social distancing with large crowds.
“I’m not making excuses, but for us it was the safety of our staff and then also the patrons that come in,” he said.
Those looking to swim in Vigo County can do so at Fowler Park’s bathing beach starting Saturday.
“It’s supposed to open at noon. Now we’re on track to do that.,” said Vigo County Parks Superintendent Adam Grossman.
Playgrounds had been projected to open in stage 3, but under the governor’s order they will remain closed for the time being.
Braylin Isham said nit being able to play at the playground makes her feel sad, but she has found other things to do until she can play again.
“Like Go inside and watch a movie or just talk. Or run around the area,” she said.
Under the governor’s latest order, there’s no timeline to reopen playgrounds.
