TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Saint george orthodox church held a special ceremony this morning As they blessed the Wabash River at Fairbanks Park on Sunday.
The ceremony is a day when orthodox Christians Celebrate the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
It’s celebrated at different bodies of water across the world.
Around 30 people stood at the banks of the Wabash River to pray and give thanks.
“Some people actually dive in to retrieve the cross. We just throw the cross in the water. The cross is a symbol of our christian faith. It’s one of the material faith we use to bless and to sanctify,” said Father Paul Fuller of St. George Orthodox Church.
This is the third year that the ceremony has been held.
