SMWC receives new benches made from recycled bottle caps

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – There are four new benches on one local college campus as part of a continued effort to support sustainability.

Vigo County Waste Management delivered the benches to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Thursday.

The benches are made from plastic bottle caps. For several years, students at the college have been collecting caps that are then delivered to Green Tree Plastics in Evansville.

That company uses the caps to manufacture items like benches, picnic tables and trash bins. There are dozens of items on the college’s campus that are made from recycled bottle caps.

“It does keep it out of the landfill. It does beautify the campus, but it’s also very, very low maintenance. You can take a power washer to them to clean them. They don’t need to be painted. They don’t need to be stained. Very, very minimal upkeep,” says Angie Gifford, Associate Director of Career Development at SMWC.

Gifford also says the benches are a nice addition because many people like to sit outside to enjoy the beautiful scenery on campus.
