Saint Mary of the Woods College is doing their part to brighten the futures of young girls in the Valley.
The private college hosted their annual Expanding Horizon’s event Saturday morning.
The program began with a speech from keynote speaker Dr. Kristina Lawyer.
Lawyer is a Rose Hulman Graduate and assistant professor of applied engineering at Indiana State University.
After the speaker the girls split off into individual workshops pertaining to their field of interest.
Workshops included science projects like making lava lamps, as well as a sneak peak into the world of nursing.
Each workshop was lead by female STEM role models from all around the Wabash Valley.
“It’s important for girls to be exposed to these careers early on so that they recognize their choices and they can think about them as they move through high school and college,” said Janet Clark, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.
The program is held every year in the fall.
There is a small fee to sign up, but the day is filled with lunch, a new T-shirt and the chance to learn from successful women in the STEM field.
