Sheriff: Man charged after unattended fire spreads into woods in Vermillion County

VERMILLION Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Vermillion County man is charged after a brush fire spread into acres of woods Saturday.

According to the Vermillion County sheriff, callers reported smoke in the area of a stopped train on the Hillsdale Rail spur around 4 p.m.

It took fire crews nearly two hours to put the fire out.

Investigators found that Ryan Pfister of Hillsdale started a small brush fire and left it unattended.

They said Pfister and his wife were inside their home, unaware of the fire.

Pfister was charged under Indiana Code 13-17-9-3 and is summoned to court.

The Vermillion County sheriff is reminding residents that a burn ban for the county is still in effect.
