Shelburn man in custody after hatchet attack, kidnapping

SULLIVAN CO. Ind. – A Shelburn man is in custody after attacking a man in Sullivan and forcing him into the trunk of a car.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s investigators say the victim, Robert Nagy, 28, was kidnapped from his residence by force just after midnight Thursday and taken to a rural area where he was severely beaten.

Nagy was later treated for serious head and facial injuries, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital, where he is awaiting transfer to an Indianapolis hospital.

Following a joint investigation, between the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, a suspect, Michael L. Scott, 29, of Shelburn, Ind., was arrested in connection to the incident.

After a foot search with K9’s and drones, Vigo County Sheriff’s officials located Scott near a railroad track, near Oregon Church Road in Vigo County.

Scott was first transported to the Vigo County Jail for questioning, and later transferred to the Sullivan County Jail to face kidnapping charges.

Police learned a female, who was not a willing participant in the kidnapping, had also been in the vehicle, and was battered by Scott following the kidnapping.

The female jumped from the car near US 41 and Harlan Road in Vigo County. She then flagged down a passerby, who transported her to the Terre Haute Police Department.

The female, whose name is not being released at this time, was not seriously injured and declined a medical treatment.

After the female flagged down a passerby, Scott fled southbound on US 41 in her vehicle.

A short time later, Scott crashed the car near Boot City, on US 41 south, before fleeing the scene on foot.

Scott is facing charges of kidnapping, criminal confinement, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon and intimidation.

Scott remains in the Sullivan County Jail under $120,000. bond with 10% allowed.
