Salvation Army to assist Vigo County families with back to school

News

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Salvation Army in Vigo County will be helping families in need with back to school.

The organization will be giving away 500 backpacks and school supplies to Vigo County students in need.

The items given away depend on the donations received.

New this year, the Salvation Army partnered with the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club for this giveaway.

“The hope with this ministry is that we can serve those living in the 150 to 200 percentile of poverty. It’s really hard for families to provide a meal for their family, let alone school supplies,” says Elizabeth Little, Program Coordinator and Case Manager.

The giveaways will take place on the following dates and times:

July 29 – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
July 30 – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
July 31 – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Those seeking assistance will need to provide a picture ID, proof of address within Vigo County, and proof of income or benefits in the last thirty days for all adults.

Two forms of ID will be needed for each child. Social security cards and birth certificates are preferred.

The Salvation Army is located at 234 S 8th Street in Terre Haute. Please call 812-232-4081 for more information.

This year on July 31, there will also be clothing items available to purchase for $1 per item during the back to school program hours.
