Salvation Army Helps Kids Get Back to School

The Salvation Army is helping local children get ready for back to school.

This week, they’re giving away backpacks and school supplies to Vigo County families in need.

The effort is made possible by donations from the community.

Last year, the Salvation Army helped over 500 families and they expect to do the same this year.

Captain Jason Schall says it’s important to help youth because they are the future.

“We are trying to help our future generations in our community, so they can prepare for their education, regardless of whether it’s kindergarten or 12th grade,” says Capt. Schall. “We’re out to make sure they have a great start to their school year.”

Giveways will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Salvation Army office at 234 S. 8th Street.

On Tuesday, the giveaways will take place at 10 A.M., 12 P.M., 1 P.M. and 3 P.M.

On Wednesday, they will take place at 10 A.M., 12 P.M., 1 P.M., 3 P.M., 4 P.M. and 6 P.M.

There are some requirements. Families will need to bring Picture ID, a birth certificate for each child, and Social Security cards for everyone in the household.

They’ll also need to show proof of income or benefits in the last 30 days, and proof of address in Vigo County.
