Salvation Army gives away school supplies

News

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Salvation Army in Vigo County began its annual school supply giveaway Monday.

The organization expects to give away at least 500 new backpacks filled with new school supplies.

Several volunteers worked to make the giveaway possible.

Salvation Army staff said the hope is to help local families living in poverty.

To give them a brand new backpack, there’s children in the community that wouldn’t have this if we did not do this giveaway.”

Elizabeth Little, Salvation Army program coordinator

Children need to be educated and so we believe this is very important. If they don’t have the proper supplies, how are they going to pursue an education? And we don’t want the burden to be on families that don’t have the financial ability to do this and we don’t the burden to be on the teachers either.”

Sue Linden, Envoy

The giveaways will continue through Wednesday.

A picture ID, proof of Vigo County address and proof of income or benefits in the past 30 days will be required as well as two forms of ID for each child.
