TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Recent research shows that U.S. 41 is considered the most dangerous road in the state of Indiana.
According to driving data company Geotab, between 2008 and 2017, there were 106 crashes on U.S. 41.
These crashes resulted in 111 fatalities, with an average of around 10 fatal crashes each year.
Of the 50 dangerous roads listed, U.S. 41 in Indiana was ranked 38th for most fatal crashes and 39th for total crashes.
Some local drivers say they aren’t shocked that U.S. 41 is considered so dangerous.
“I’m not really surprised that 41 is so dangerous, with the high traffic that comes through here. It’s a lot of drivers. People have to come to expect a lot of accidents, a high traffic rate,” said Beau Harpenau, local driver.
There are also others who say they don’t have safety concerns on the road.
“There are accidents, construction, and gets a little tight during certain parts of the day, but nothing I’d consider the most dangerous in the state,” said Gloria Swayze, local driver.
According to Geotab, 30,000 people across the U.S. Are killed each year due to car crashes.
The most dangerous road in Illinois is U.S. 45, which runs through Champaign and Effingham.
From 2008 to 2017, there were 100 crashes on this road with 112 fatalities.
Geotab used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct research.
