Out-of-control brushfire in Charleston damages storage facility

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A brush fire that got out of control damaged a Quonset hut storage facility late Thursday afternoon.

According to a statement issued by Charleston Fire Department Fire Chief Steve Bennett, the Charleston Fire Department was dispatched to 624 W State St., responding to a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire and smoke and immediately started a defensive operation from the exterior of the structures. A second alarm was called to bring in additional manpower.

The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes. There were no injuries.

Due to the extent of the damage to the buildings, fire crews had to bring in backhoes to tear down portions of the buildings to extinguish hot spots.

The Charleston Fire Department was assisted by Mattoon Fire Department, Lincoln Fire Protection District, Charleston Police Department, City of Charleston Building Department, City of Charleston Public Works, ColesMoultrie 911 and The American Red Cross. Crews were still on scene as of 8:00 p.m.
