CHICAGO (AP) — Police say an off-duty Chicago police officer shot and critically wounded a man during an exchange of gunfire after the man tried to rob him on the city’s South Side.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Tom Ahern says the man approached the officer about 5:45 p.m. Monday in the Calumet Heights neighborhood and tried the rob the officer.

He says the two exchanged gunfire and the man was hit. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that fire officials say the man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police say the officer was not injured and a weapon was recovered at the scene.
