IL man accused of killing pregnant girlfriend leads police on multi-county chase

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. – A Shelbyville, Ill. man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend led police on a multi-county chase before he was finally taken into custody.

According to the Illinois State Police, Deven A. Barger, 24, was charged with first degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child after allegedly shooting his pregnant girlfriend, Samantha L. Cushing, 22, Monday in Shelbyville.

The Effingham Police Department attempted to take Barger into custody Monday morning, but he fled, leading police on a multi-county chase, ending in Christian County, where Barger was safely taken into custody. 

Barger is being held by the Illinois Department of Corrections with bond set at $5 million with 10% to apply.
