COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A Coles County man is facing two charges of first degree murder in the death of a four-month-old boy.
Isaac Currey, 21, appeared in court Tuesday afternoon for a bond hearing after being arrested earlier that morning on charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment/cause injury.
At the hearing, a doctor testified that it was “clear” the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the baby. He said a fall or a drop like Currey initially described to police wouldn’t have caused the child’s death.
Police had been called to the area of 600 College Street in Lerna on Monday for a call of the four-month-old being unresponsive; the child was pronounced dead on the scene.
Currey told officers in an interview that he had dropped the child the night before and believed he had been hurt in the fall. He told police the child’s breathing had changed to gasping; the child was put to bed anyway and no emergency treatment was sought.
The infant was found unresponsive the following morning.
