EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Charleston woman was killed early Sunday morning in Effingham when the vehicle she was in was struck head-on by a suspected drunk driver.

The victim, Alyssa M. Rhodes, 29, of Charleston was the passenger in a vehicle driven by Mara D. Ferguson, 28.

The pair was traveling eastbound on US 40 near 900th Street in Effingham when a vehicle driven by Andrew E. Welter, 33, of Altamont, was traveling westbound. Welter swerved into the eastbound lane. Ferguson attempted to swerve left to avoid the collision, but her vehicle was struck head-on by Welter’s vehicle.

Rhodes was pronounced dead at the scene. Ferguson and Welter were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Welter was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
