TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Future plans for the old Terre Haute Police Department Headquarters building on Wabash Ave. are in the works.

Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said the old building will be torn down and replaced with a new housing unit. The unit will house students and young professionals. Some units will be a shared spaced in order to reduce rent. While others will be for individuals.

Mayor Bennett said he believes this is a positive thing for the location.

“Anytime we can redevelop a site, especially a prime location like that in the downtown area. And help address some of our housing needs,” Bennett said. “It’s kind of a win, win situation for all of us here that we get the property back on the tax rolls and get it into some productive hands.”

Mayor Bennett hopes to have the project completed by the next school year.
