Throughout the week the Vigo County Fair has made efforts to not only keep the fairgrounds clean, but also the environment.
Hot temperatures at the fair means more bottles of water and that also brings a great opportunity to recycle. Leadership at the Vigo County Fair made this possible for fair-goers.
“We have canisters positioned throughout the fairgrounds to encourage people to recycle their cups and whatever plastic or paper or whatever is recyclable into our canisters.” said Bionca Gambill, Community Liaison”
The canisters are a start but the efforts also depend on teaching the community about recycling. “If we want to encourage recycling we can encourage all we want, but we need to promote it and educate people on how to recycle.”, says Gambill.
4-H’ers have also started saving bottle caps which they will recycle in the future.
“We’re encouraging our 4-H’ers to save those bottle caps but also we’re educating them and their parents about keeping things out of the waste-stream.”, Gambill.
Some attendees of the fair also believe recycling is important for many reasons.
“There’s no throwing trash away. It just goes into a landfill. So anything we can do to help the environment and keep those pollutants out is a good thing.”, said a fair-goer.
She also believes that recycling is our future. “There’s not going to be the option to throw trash away, it’s going to be more and more composting and recycling.”
