The selection of a Vigo County jail location, cost and all around purpose has been an ongoing debate by many residents and county officials.
The conversation has gone on for a few years, but recently county commissioners said they submitted plans to a federal judge for a location at the old International Paper Property. That would indicate some movement however one county official tells us today, he still feels like the public is left out of the loop.
Brendan Kearns says county commissioners hired a firm to conduct a jail feasibility study. Stage two of that study goes over alternatives to incarceration, suggested programs for the community for drug and alcohol, mental health and the homeless population.
He says officials expected to have that information by now and they don’t.
“I think if this phase two indicates that we need to invest in something like that, that adds efficacy to the argument and you’re more apt to get something in place,” councilman Kearns said.
Kearns says he believes there’s a lack of communication between the commissioners, the public and other elected officials.
He says council members were given just a couple days notice of an executive session that will take place Thursday, so officials can go over information commissioners submitted to a federal judge.
