A Vermillion County man is behind bars, after a joint investigation led them to find he was in possession of several stolen items.
On Tuesday, officers were investigating a domestic complaint when details were learned that males had fled into the nearby woods with possible stolen items from a business in North Terre Haute. A full box of merchandise was located at a Clinton residence with the address of Kadel’s Hallmark in North Terre Haute.
Officers set up a perimeter of the area and a K9 sweep of the woods was conducted by ISP and K-9 Zeke. Approximately 75-100 yards inside the wood line from South 9th Street, Multiple items from the same Hallmark store were located strewn across the ground including cases of un-opened Limited Edition 2018 Christmas Items.
Vigo County Central Dispatch was able to assist in the investigation and contact the owner of Kadel’s Hallmark were it was learned that the items located had been stolen from a storage container behind her store and she was unaware of the theft. Terre Haute Police arrived with her and took a burglary report while we were able to recover the stolen items in the woods along with other items of evidence.
Hugh B. Carpenter II, 35, of Clinton was later located at his residence and taken into custody on felony charges of Possession of Stolen Items. Carpenter was transported to the Vermillion County Jail where he is being held on $10,000.00 bond.
The investigation is still ongoing with both Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office and Terre Haute Police Department.
The owner of Kadel’s Hallmark was able to recover her merchandise. The total of the merchandise was valued at just under $3,300.00.
