TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A traffic stop turned into a police chase through Terre Haute and Brazil, Ind., early Thursday morning for officers with the Terre Haute Police Department, ending in a controlled collision and the arrest of one man.
Midnight shift officers with the THPD said they attempted to pull over William Leonard Thursday morning near 11 1/2 and Hulman Streets in Terre Haute, but he instead drove off. Officers followed Leonard, a Terre Haute resident, through the southern part of the city and eventually began heading east towards Brazil, Ind.
Once the chase entered into Clay County, sheriffs deputies joined the officers. Eventually, near US Highway 40 and County Road 400 East in Brazil, one deputy stopped Leonard’s car by using a pit maneuver, or hitting the back of his car and forcing it to quickly turn sideways. No one was injured during the collision, according to a THPD Facebook post.
Leonard was arrested at the scene for resisting law enforcement, a felony, possession of a syringe and paraphernalia and driving while suspended. His case is pending in Vigo County Division 6 Court.
