Passion For Soaring

Taking flight for students at Indiana State University is something that instills great pride. This week, the university is hosting a traditional flying competition.

Sycamores are taking to the air as the Regional Safe-Con Safety and Evaluation Flying Competition is pitting five top universities’ teams and their pilots against one another. Student pilots do pre-flight checks, while others make sure the aircraft is safe for operation. Along with challenging their flight safety skills, mental knowledge on flight regulations, all while instilling that desire to keep soaring.

“Flying in general is a passion for everybody here, once you  get into it, you don’t get out of it. You’re in it one way or another. When you bring the schools together like this it’s a great time to interact with your colleagues and future co-workers,” says Chief Judge, Mike Carroll.

For flight captains, Carson York and Cameron Chiles, it’s about pursuing the aviation dream they’ve had since they were little kids, and igniting that drive in others, while still having some friendly rivalry.

“All of us want to win but it’s awesome to see many people take this seriously. Every school here takes this as seriously as they can we compete against each other we prep for years,” says ISU Flight Co-Captain, Carson York.

“A lot of people have such a passion for aviation, and it’s kind of a stereotype that pilots are cocky everyone thinks they are the best it’s just fun to get together and find out who really is the best,” says ISU Flight Co-Captain, Cameron Chiles.

And as far as this stiff competition goes, ISU is hoping to land a victory. “Obviously everyone would like to win however when it comes to safety if we all go out the whole week without any incidents I think we are all winners at that point. But I am rooting for the Sycamores,” says Chief Instructor for ISU Flight School, Kevin Donnar.

If you’d like to watch this week long competition, the public is invited to observe just come by Terre Regional Airport, and make sure to adhere to rules while there. The Safe-Con Competition concludes on Saturday.
