Almost a dozen students and their bus driver took a detour to the hospital on the way to school this morning.
Around 8:00 am, a semi-truck slid across the center line and hit a Spencer-Owen bus carrying 31 passengers. Students on-board ranged in age from 7 to 17.
ISP Troopers say the truck driver, 35 year old Christopher Lee Reinhardt of Terre Haute, was driving too fast for the conditions. The accident happened north of Dunn Road on U.S. 231.
When the truck hit the bus, it pushed the bus off the road in the direction of a tree line. Officials credit the bus driver with keeping the bus upright and away from the trees.
Those students who were hurt suffered glass cuts and bumps to their heads, chests and arms. The bus driver, 70 year old Verl Keith, suffered head and hand injuries and was taken to a Bloomington hospital.
The students who were not hurt, were taken to class and checked out by the school nurse.
