Opioids and Heroin – an addict’s story

News

According to a recent report by the U.S. Surgeon General of only one in 10 individuals who are suffering from substance abuse actually receive treatment.

A  man, who we’ll call “Adam”, has spent most of his life as a drug addict.  He wants others
to hear his story, his painful struggle of drug abuse and the hope of life saving treatment.

Adam started using prescription pain meds or opioids when he was just 13 .  It started
with oxycontin that he got from a friend.  His addiction worsened as he got older.  He
didn’t think it was dangerous because he it was “prescription medication”

Adam’s life was spiraling out of control.  He eventually, found help from Dr. Irving Haber.   The Terre Haute
physician specializes in pain treatment, but he also helps addicts like Adam.

There are various treatments for addicts.  Most involve the use of drugs to counteract the
cravings and withdrawal symptoms.  For three years, Adam has been using syboxone strips that he places under his tongue to help lessen the withdrawal effects.  In addition, counseling helps him deal with the many issues surrounding his addiction
