Construction of a new jail continues to cause concern for Vigo County residents. Some feel there are still many questions that need to be answered. That’s why a public forum was organized to help tackle those lingering questions.
The Vigo County Taxpayers Association hosted a forum Monday night to inform and answer questions residents may have on the new jail.
The presentation included statistics on the amount of inmates in Vigo County and reasons why a new jail is necessary.
Lisa Spence, a Terre Haute resident, came to this forum in hopes of understanding more about the jail.
“I’m here tonight really to understand more about how the decision-making has gone forward with regard to the jail, and what decisions are yet to come, and also to try to influence some of those decisions,” says Spence.
Spence and several others were able to ask direct questions with decision-makers and county officials. She plans on her regular participation to become a more informed citizen.
“We’re really trying to do a better job of being informed citizens,” says Spence, “and then doing what we hope more citizens continue to do which is to reach out to the people making, and try to say, ‘here are my thoughts. Please consider my thoughts when doing what you do’.”
The Vigo County Taxpayers association did not take a stance on the new jail, although they said they may take a stance in the future.
