TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Today a check was presented to the lucky duck who won Catholic Charities’ Rubber Duck Regatta.
Pete McCarville of Wheaton, Illinois was the owner of the winning duck during the 2019 Regatta on July 4.
This was McCarville’s first time participating in the event, he plans to participate again next year.
During the Regatta 12 thousand yellow rubber ducks were released from a crane into the Wabash River near Fairbanks Park.
Participants donated money to Catholic Charities by purchasing the ducks, and $50,000 was raised in duck profits.
McCarville had no idea he’d own the winning duck and plans to put his money to good use, a college fund for his daughter.
“We had a voicemail that said that I won a duck race and I had to remember that I actually entered the duck race a month earlier. So it was quite a bit of a surprise,” he said. “Not something you really expect to happen to you when you enter a contest. But if you buy a duck for the duck race you can win.”
McCarville attributed his win to the 48 ducks he purchased for Catholic Charities.
