A tragic discovery is made after a fire at a residence near Brazil.
Yesterday, (Monday January 1st), the Posey Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 5041 W. State Road 340 near Brazil at 4 P.M. Upon arrival, the structure was fully engulfed with one person still inside.
Assistance was immediately requested due to the severity of the incident and extreme cold temperatures. Additional responding departments included Brazil City, Jackson, Dick Johnson & Cory fire departments from Clay County and Seelyville and Nevins Fire Department out of Vigo County.
Entry was made into the structure but firefighters had to exit due to the intensity of the fire becoming too great. The fire department remained on the scene throughout the night battling hot spots.
According to the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department, at daybreak today, (January 2nd), the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department along with the State Fire Marshall’s office and Clay County Coroner’s office began an investigation and continued search efforts.
At 2:00 P.M. Tuesday afternoon, a body was found already deceased.
The name and identity of the victim is not being released at this time until family is notified and a positive identification is confirmed.
The body was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital where an autopsy is being scheduled. At this time, there is no official cause as the fire remains under investigation.
