Officers struck by impaired, distracted driver

Two officers were injured Sunday night when an impaired driver ran off the road while texting, according to police.

Vincennes Police Officer Kody Waggoner, 32 of Vincennes,IN, and Lawrenceville Police Officer Byron Middlecoat, 36, of Sumner, IL, were returning to their vehicles following a traffic stop at approximately 8:27 p.m.Sunday when a vehicle driven by Erika Boger, 39, of Francisville, IL, left the roadway and struck Waggoner’s squad car. Waggoner’s car was then forced into the rear of Middlecoat’s vehicle.

Waggoner, who was outside of his vehicle at the time of the accident, was struck during the crash. Middlecoat was inside his vehicle during the incident.

Both officers were transported to anearby hospital where they were treated and released.

Boger was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver and texting while driving.
