On Monday evening, board member Jackie Lower was elected to be the president of the Vigo County School Corporation Board. The vice president position will now be held by Tammy Pearson and Alpa Patel is the secretary.
As a former teacher, Mrs. Lower says she looks forward to serving. She wants to help the corporation address issue like the physical condition of the three high schools. She says open houses at the three schools were not well attended and she hopes for better community involvement this year.
“They have to learn about what the needs are before they can cast a vote, said Lower. Or there needs to be conversation.”
Tonight’s meeting also saw the board approve several grants, including a school safety grant. The board also talked about making the correct decision to delay schools due to the recent inclement weather conditions.
Finally, new president Lower expressed her disappointment that a local professional organization called some students “thugs” on social media. She said it was very inappropriate and that a number of students were hurt by the online comments.
