TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Senator Mike Braun discusses his stance on medical marijuana and immigration.
With more states pushing towards legislation that legalizes medical marijuana, Indiana U.S. Senator Mike Braun says he does recognize its benefits.
“I believe when it comes to medical marijuana, there are too many good reasons why you need to start making that legal for that purpose,” Braun said.
33 states currently allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes and Indiana is one of 17 that does not.
Braun says moving forward, he does think more states will move towards similar legislation.
“That’s going to cascade through all states more quickly than not,” Braun said.
When asked about legalizing recreational marijuana, Braun says that process will move much more slowly.
Braun also says he believes that decision will ultimately be up to leaders of the future.
“I still think that’s going to be up to the next generation whether all states will end up going there,” Braun said.
Braun also spoke on immigration, the senator says states like Indiana can benefit from those who enter the country legally.
“We need people, in a state like Indiana where the unemployment rate is really low, we need legal immigration to fill a lot of the jobs,” Braun said.
In addition to his support for legal immigration, Braun says that the country does have to take steps to make sure that people are not entering the country illegally.
“For all the people that come into this country the right way, we’ve got to have border security and then turn to all the issues that have resulted by not having it,” Braun said.
Braun says that the U.S. needs a barrier or some form of technology on the border.
