People flocked to Palestine, Illinois for a Memorial Day tradition.
It was the annual car show at Leaverton Park.
People enter their classic cars and motorcycles to be judged, but participants say the best part is making friends and sharing car stories.
We met John Upton who bought an Impala SS427 when he was 17-years-old. His dad found it for him in Shawneetown, Illinois.
“He came home one day and said ‘would you be interested in an Impala SS’ and I said ‘yes’,” says Upton. “Well, then I found out later it was an Impala SS427. He didn’t know what the 427 meant. When he did find out, he wanted me to sell it. He was afraid I was going to kill myself or someone else. Fortunately, none of that happened.”
Upton drove the car until 1975 when gas prices jumped. That’s when he decided to park it and it’s been parked ever since.
