Local community leaders geared up Thursday for an event that helps save lives.
The March of Dimes luncheon was held at Union Hospital. It’s the fundraising kickoff leading up to the march which will take place on May 18 at Terre Haute North High School.
It comes at a crucial time. Development Manager Derek Richey says Indiana is seeing an increase in maternal deaths and premature birth rates in low income families.
“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us and that means a lot of education programs for low income families and mothers,” says Richey.
The money raised goes toward education and research. Richey says one example is a new blood test that can give mothers insight into whether their baby is at risk of being born prematurely.
