VIGO Co., Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — If you’re looking to make syrup, now is the perfect time.
The Vigo County Parks Department began the tapping process last week at Prairie Creek Park.
The department tapped into several sugar maple trees earlier this month to get sap in.
Around 750 gallons of sap has been collected so far.
Adam Grossman, supervisor of the Vigo County Parks Department said the cold weather plays a major part in the tapping process.
“Unfortunately we’re tied to Mother Nature and what she’s going to give us, what weather and what days we’re going to do it. For an example, this Saturday looks like a good day to collect, start up our pumps and hopefully get enough to run on Sunday,” Grossman said.
The park offers tours to those who want to know more about the syrup making process.
