Locals gather at the West Vigo Community Center to give to those in need

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Community members gathered at the West Vigo Community Center to give holiday baskets to those in need.

The giveaway is a partnership between the West Vigo Community Center and Highland Church.

“The Christmas baskets we’ve been doing for 25 years plus,” Adam Morely, Vice President of the West Vigo Community Center, said.

The organizations came together to give out 300 Christmas baskets on Saturday. The baskets included: turkey, mashed potatoes, noodles, vegetables and more.

Organizers say that there is enough food in the baskets to last a family a week.

“We need each other, for sure. More this time of year than any other time of year. We have a lot of kids that go hungry, lots of people that don’t have food on the table, let alone a good family meal. So, we’re hoping we can bridge a little bit of the gap here in our commuity and provide a meal for those who need it this time of year,” Pastor of Highland Church, Ryan Thomas, said.

Organizers also stated that they give out Christmas baskets as a present back to their community.

Highland Church and the West Vigo Community Center also will host a free Christmas dinner for the community on Sunday night.
