According to an Illinois State Police preliminary investigation, Danielia A. Kimball, 54, of Mattoon was driving a semi westbound on I-70 near Martinsville, Ill. For an unknown reason, she drove off the roadway, crossed the median and side-swiped another semi traveling eastbound.

A third semi driver swerved to avoid striking Kimball’s vehicle, crossed the median, struck the cab of Kimball’s vehicle and came to a rest in the westbound lane. A fourth semi was unable to avoid striking Kimball’s vehicle while it was blocking the eastbound lanes.

Kimball was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Champaign. The driver of the fourth semi, Malcom T. Smith, 28, of Georgia, was transported by ambulance to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute.

The interstate was shut down until around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
