TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Progress is continuing on Terre Haute’s convention center.
Members of the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board said the convention center could be completed sonner than expected.
“The parking garage will be done late this fall and then next spring is when the convention center will open,” Jon Marvel, CIB President, said.
Board members said the convention center could be completed by April of 2022.
New CIB member, Chris Switzer, said he has big hopes for what the convention center means for the community.
“We’ve always had the potential to be a destination city for the state of Indiana,” Switzer said. “Meetings of mayrs, meetings of all commissioners throughout the state and we can have those meetings here and it’s awesome to have somewhere fresh and new to have that.”
According to Switzer, plumbing and other utilities that go under the initial concret slab, are starting now.
Switzer and Marvel both said the convention center is on budget. The projected cost is around $26,000,000.
“We’re a little ahead of schedule and right on track with the budget,” Marvel said. “So, there have been no surprises.”
Construction on the parking garage should start the first week of February. According to Garmong, construction manager for the convention center, the foundation of the garage is arounf 95% complete.
