TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Severe storms rolled through the Wabash Valley area over the weekend, leaving behind plenty of damage.
“Substantial areas of damage were Fairbanks Park, Wabashiki and on out to Margaret and 25th streets,” Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer said.
The storms caused numerous downed trees and multiple power lines in the road. County crews and energy services worked together over the weekend to resolve the issues.
“Power lines were down which was a major concern for all the commissioners and team leaders and highway department,” Switzer said. “We work with those guys to get those roads closed to make sure nobody travels through and nobody gets hurt.”
Over 15,000 homes were without power over the weekend between Duke and WIN energy customers. Both services have fully restored power to all customers.
A concern of officials is the potential danger of downed or hanging power lines.
“If you see a cable TV or phone line, our wire could be going across it and energize it,” Duke Energy District Manager Rick Burger said. “So we always tell people, a downed power line, stay away from it. We had plenty of those in this area here.”
The Wabashiki bridge construction could see a possible delay due to minor damage from the storm.
