VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Knox County residents are being warned of a scam that is using the Vincennes Police Department’s non-emergency phone number.

According to a release from Vincennes Police Department’s Chief of Police, Jonathan Hillenbrand, the callers are using the non-emergency phone number for the local police department to contact residents. When the resident answers, the caller asks the resident to contact a detective, using the detective’s name, about an ongoing investigation and is given a fake phone number.

Hillenbrand is warning residents to disregard the call and to not call the phone number that is given. Hillenbrand also notes that the VPD would not operate in that manner about would only use the direct line of the police department and never a private number.

For those who have received these calls, the VPD asks you to please contact local law enforcement so that it can be documented.
