Vincennes Police announce procession for fallen K-9 Officer Gary

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Vincennes Police announced Friday that a procession will be held for fallen VPD K-9 Officer, Gary.

Officer Gary died unexpectedly on Oct. 13 after suffering a seizure.

The procession to escort Gary to Fredrick and Sons Funeral Home will be held Monday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Organizers said the procession will begin at the Vincennes Veterinary Clinic, travel south on Sixth St. and end at Frederick and Sons Funeral Home at 313 Church St. The police department invites members of the community to stand along the procession route.

The Vincennes Police Department said they hope to fill Gary’s position and is welcoming donations for a new K-9 that will be partnered with Sgt. Michael Caswell. The K-9 Unit is funded completely by donations and is not part of the city’s budget. The money raised will also be used for future training, food, equipment, and other needs for the program.

According to a press release, The Vincennes Police Department K-9 Unit has proven to be an important tool, utilized by the police to combat crime and build community relations. K-9’s are a visible deterrent to criminal activity, detecting and locating illegal drugs, tracking criminals, and searching for and locating missing people. The K-9 Unit routinely attends community events for demonstrations when requested.

Cash or checks can be dropped off at the Vincennes Police Department or mailed to 501 Busseron St. Vincennes, IN, 47591. Checks should be made out to the Vincennes Police Department K-9 Fund.
