TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Residents in the 12 Points area of Terre Haute will soon have easy access to library resources after a new branch was announced.

Friday afternoon, the Vigo County Public Library officially purchased the old Thomas Funeral Home building on N. 13th Street. The plan is to turn the location into a new 12 Points branch of the Vigo Library. It’s been more than a decade since the organization operated a third facility.

The purchase has been in the works for more than a year, with plans for the branch including demographic research and financial planning. Library officials say they welcome input from locals in the area as well as parties interested in potential collaboration.

“We’ve been planning to expand our reach within Vigo County for several years,” said VCPL Executive Director Kristi Howe. “With substantial financial planning, we are pleased to be able to renovate and operate this property within our existing operating budget and with money we have been saving for this opportunity.”

The property offers 4,600 square feet in the main building and includes more than 2,200 square feet of additional space in the 6-bay garage. Given the work required to convert this building into a modern library, VCPL satisfactorily secured the historic building for $125,000 but anticipates that renovations, furnishings, etc. will bring the project budget to more than one million dollars.
