VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It won’t be long before we start seeing mosquitos in the air, but a local health department says you can do your part to reduce the risk of West Nile Virus.

The Vigo County Health Department’s annual tire amnesty program is now underway. Health officials say tires are a prime breeding ground for mosquitos so they ask residents to dispose of any old tires laying on their property.

Residents can bring old tires with or without rims to the Vigo County Health Department, however, it’s asked that folks call ahead of time to make an appointment at 812-234-9181.

The program is for Vigo County residents only, proof of residence is required. Up to ten tires will be accepted per person for free.

The program will end on May 7.
