VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Vigo County Sheriff is reminding residents to never buy gift cards for people calling you over the phone pretending to be with their organization.

In a release put out to the community, Sheriff John Plasse says they have continued to get reports of possible telephone scams in the area. Those scams involve the scammer claiming to be from the sheriff’s office or other law enforcement agency. They say that the caller or someone in relation to them will be arrested if the person being called doesn’t send gift card or pre-paid credit card information to the caller.

If you receive a call like this, the Sheriff advises you to hang up, and contact the Sheriff’s Office, or your local police agency. The Sheriff adds that his office will never call and demand money or payment for an incident or crime.

The Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line can be reached at (812) 462-3226.
