VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The DNR awarded Vigo County a grant to help remove the Markle Mill Dam at Otter Creek.

This grant is worth $80,000 and is funded by Lake and River Enhancement fees paid annually by boat owners. The grants allow for the completion of projects that would be difficult for local organizations to fund independently.

Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, and local sponsors share at least 20% of the cost.

The purpose of this is to improve the water quality by reducing sediment and nutrient inputs. The improved water quality will help fish and wildlife populations and improve recreational opportunities.

This is part of a partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to fund three dam removals across the state. These projects will result in more than 1,030 miles of open streams and rivers, allowing for free passage of fish, aquatic organisms, and recreational users such as paddlers.

The plan is for the dam removal to start at the end of September or early October.
